Arr by Joel Raney . . . Hymn Tune . . .
This is simply wonderful arranging for handchimes mixed with handbells, one of the best we've ever run across at Handbell Services -- it is spectacularly good writing for Level 3.
It uses 3-5 octaves of handchimes, the more the merrier -- and both bells and chimes are interspersed in beautiful ways -- the first melody is chordal and flowing, with bell 8th notes over a chordal chime melody in the mid-bass, and the interest deepens as gentle syncopations are added and some shakes are entered and unique blends of bells and chimes appear and leave.
There is a rhythmic vitality to the music that never stops, yet it is entirely within Level 3 -- with changes in virtually every couple of measures (either with notes or with rhythms) that keeps everyone on their toes.
The music comes to several grand climax moments, and is unendingly full and rich.....a fully rewarding piece that communicates the strong spirit of the well-known 20th Century hymn.
We highly recommend this at Handbell Services as one of the best pieces we've ever seen for Level 3.
• Keys of D and F and G Major, 4/4 (and a measure of 2/4) time signature, marked "flowing gently" 88 speed
• 8th and quarter notes throughout, with some easy syncopations and pickup notes; there are several (but not many) short two-measure sections with intense moments of accidentals that will need to be worked out
• There are no special techniques, but there is lots of movement to and from bells to chimes and back in all parts
• Dynamics run the full range from soft to very loud, and there are several intense musical moments
